Silchar marks World Toilet Day with weeklong sanitation drive

SMC Commissioner leads awareness and cleanliness drive, ensuring functional and hygienic public toilets

GUWAHATI, Nov 21: The Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) observed World Toilet Day with a weeklong sanitation initiative, focusing on raising public awareness and improving hygiene at the Trunk Road and Dak Bunglow public toilets. The programme, held on November 19 was led by SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, highlighting the civic body’s commitment to a cleaner more responsible Silchar.

Commissioner Singh, accompanied by Executive Officer Nabuttom Sharma, Pourasakhis, collection agency supervisors and the Shrishti Waste Management Team, inspected the facilities and engaged with frontline workers overseeing their maintenance. Both public toilets were made fully functional, providing citizens with clean, safe and hygienic sanitation services from World Toilet Day onward.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Singh praised the dedication of the maintenance teams and underscored that public toilets reflect a city’s civic discipline. She urged citizens to use the facilities responsibly and participate in the city’s cleanliness drive, emphasising that public cooperation is key to the initiative’s success.

To honour their efforts, individuals responsible for consistent upkeep of the toilets were felicitated, recognising their contribution to Swachh Silchar and fostering collective responsibility in maintaining shared spaces.

Adding a visual appeal to the campaign, the toilets were decorated with bright colors and fresh flowers, while the Shrishti team engaged visitors with messaging promoting clean toilet habits, reinforcing the importance of sanitation and community participation.
