SIVASAGAR, Jan 18: The Sivasagar district administration observed Silpi Divas at the District Library premises, commemorating the legendary writer, composer and filmmaker Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, along with the rest of the state on Friday.
The District Commissioner lit the ceremonial lamp and garlanded the statue of the Rupkonwar. In his address, he urged the younger generation to study and work with dedication if they truly wished to honour the great visionary. Additional District Commissioner Lukumani Bora paid rich tributes to the memorable contributions of Rupkonwar in enriching the treasury of Assamese culture.
As part of the programme, a music competition was organised among undergraduate students. Winners in different categories were awarded prizes by the guests at the end of the competition.
The Principal of Dipanjali Music College, Ratul Kakati, delivered a profound speech highlighting the life and works of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala.
The event was attended by Assistant Commissioners Ganesh Chandra Boro and Bidisha Shaikia, Cultural Development Officer Munmi Shyam, playwright Prashant Sharma, poet Prem Gogoi, musician Rikta Dey, cultural worker Trailukya Dutta and other officials of the district administration and various government departments.
Meanwhile, at Gargaon College, the Silpi Divas function was inaugurated by Diganta Konwar, Vice-Principal of the college. The Principal and noted writer Sabyasachi Mahanta delivered an inspiring speech on the Rupkonwar. Prof Pranob Duwora and Dr Debajani Bokolial also spoke on the life and works of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala.
Our Morigaon Correspondent adds: In memory of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the Barapujia Sakha Sahitya Sabha observed ‘Silpi Diwas’ with enthusiasm at Barapujia. The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the organisation’s flag by its president, Dr Pradip Kr Deka, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and floral tribute at the portrait of the renowned artist by Arabinda Deka, president of the Kuhi subcommittee.
A musical programme was organised to mark the occasion, inaugurated by former principal Kanak Ch Bora. Students from Nilutpal Deka Senior Secondary School, Alakapur ME School, Swahid Tilak Deka ME School, Barapujia Higher Secondary School, Barapujia ME School, Mukti Yodha Lalsing Deka Jatiya Vidyalaya and Niz Mikirgaon Senior Basic School participated in the performances.
District Commissioner Anamika Tewari inaugurated a book of poetry edited by Ajanta Sonowal, president of the Akash subcommittee. The literary body also presented a memento to Junmoni Bora, famed for the ‘Surya Kanya’ achievement and a world record, in recognition of her contribution.
Senior journalist Bulen Ch Nath of Raha was honoured by the literary body and former chief secretary of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Dr Upendrajit Sarma, for his contribution to journalism. The event was also attended by executive member of Asom Sahitya Sabha Pinakhi Bhusan Mahanta and MZSS secretary Kushal Bora.
The programme concluded with a recitation of poems, reinforcing the message that the new generation must learn the importance of ‘Silpi Diwas’ from the elders.
