The Sonitpur district administration in a joint venture with Sonitpur police, Transport and other line departments concerned has decided to take up stringent measures to curb road accidents and reduce the number of death cases due to accidents in the district, informed the deputy commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra in a joint press meet held at the new Conference Hall of the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday, where SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma was also present.

If a driver of any vehicle is found to be in an inebriated/drunken state, the group of people will have to switch drivers or arrange for an alternate driver.
The deputy commissioner further said the administration will take all necessary steps to install road signage, reflectors where required without further delay. Also, speed breakers and rumble strips will be installed at those locations where accidents had taken place due to over speeding.
All line departments concerned will be pressed into action to do the needful to prevent road accidents during this upcoming festive season, he said, adding that check posts will be set up at specific locations in the district, where joint checking by police, transport and magistrates will be carried out daily. Also, the Excise department officials have been directed to intensify raids against illicit liquor during this period.
Also, to curb the menace of e-rickshaws in the district, plans are being made to regulate their movement on the main roads and any e-rickshaw found plying on the national highway will be confiscated.
Speaking to the media, SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma said that to measure the speed of vehicles on the national highway, speed guns have been installed in four locations of the district on the highway and that strict action will be taken against all those violating road safety guidelines.
A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was also held earlier in the day, in the presence of all circle officers and OCs and ICs of various police stations and outposts where accident spots of the district were reviewed in detail and necessary suggestions taken from the respective officers.
