TEZPUR, Aug 4: The two-day Sonitpur District Day celebrations came to a close on Sunday evening with a cultural programme titled “Chirojugomiya Geetor Ek Suriya Godhuli” at the Neriwalm auditorium here, paying a soulful tribute to the district’s rich artistic legacy and collective aspirations.
The concluding programme, blending music, poetry, dance and drama, opened with a group presentation by Jyoti Bharati artistes of a song penned by late musician Dilip Choudhury.
It was inaugurated by Naduar MLA and chairman of the Gorukhuti Agricultural Project, Padma Hazarika, who recited a poem by Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala and presented a dramatic monologue from the classic play Samay, originally written by theatre doyen Prafulla Bora.
In his address, Hazarika highlighted Sonitpur’s vibrant heritage and urged the youth to foster a work culture that would transform the district into a model of holistic development and a major hub of tourism and economic activity in Assam.
The evening featured a Sattriya group dance choreographed by renowned artiste Prerana Baishya, and recital of self-composed poems by Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha and Additional Deputy Commissioner Kamal Baruah.
A colourful puppet dance staged under the aegis of the Women and Child Development Department was coordinated by ADC Kabita Kakati Konwar and District Social Welfare Officer Rubi Kalita.
Singers Chandamita Thakuria and Bishnu Sharma evoked nostalgia with evergreen Assamese numbers such as Ahar Dore Ubhoti Atori Gola, Jon Dhole Jonalite, Sandhiyar Akashot Bogoli Ure and Poka Dhanor Maje-Maje, rendering timeless classics of Jyotish Bhattacharya, Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Jayanta Hazarika and Dr Birendranath Dutta.
Earlier in the day, a community walkathon was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das from Ananda Chandra Agarwala Park.
Officials, students, NSS volunteers and members of the public took part.
A blood-donation camp was held at the Marwari Panchayati Dharamshala in association with Marwari Yuva Manch, alongside a special health check-up camp for senior citizens organised at the Ganesh Ghat office of the Red Cross Society.
The camp was inaugurated by Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava and attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner for Health Tahir Alam, Assistant Commissioner Irish Arman Ahmed and noted physician Dr Biswaranjan Kalita.
Over 100 elderly citizens, including retired academicians Dr Abani Kumar Sharma and Prof Himendra Nath Sarma, availed of the facilities.
As part of the District Day celebrations, a tree-plantation drive was undertaken on Saturday at Naduar led by CDC Manas Saikia, while on Sunday, cabinet minister Ashok Singhal inaugurated a district-level painting competition at Dhekiajuli.
Traffic police personnel and officers of the co-district were also felicitated with certificates of appreciation, in a ceremony coordinated by CDC officer Dyotibha Bora.
