Sootea gears up for Me-Dum-Me-Phi

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Jan 2: Sootea in Biswanath Chariali has tightened its belt for the upcoming festivities of Me-Dum-Me-Phi to be celebrated on January 31.

Like the previous years, Me-Dum-Me-Phi will be observed at Mulayam Gabharu maidam located at Sola Hola in the northern part of Sootea.

The special event has been organised by Brihattar Sootea Samal Surakhya Mancha in collaboration with the Sootea branch of Tai Sahitya Sabha.

The celebrations will be observed amid conventional Ahom rituals and cultural demonstrations.

In this connection, a meeting was held at Gyan Bharati Public School and a one act drama ‘Birangana Mula Gabharu’ by Nilamani Handique, secretary of Sootea Tai Sahitya Sabha branch, was inaugurated by historian Karunananda Hatibarua and journalist Ananda Handique respectively on Thursday.

Inaugurating the drama show, Hatibarua stated about the significant role of Mula Gabharu and how she fought against the intruders and succumbed to the injury during the fight against the enemies.

Journalist Handique said, “the drama will help in arousing interest among the younger generation of the great people in our glorious history”.

The meeting was also addressed by Nilamani Handique, the script writer alongwith Lukumani Barua, Rajib Saikia, Naba Bora, Nirupan Barua among others. It was attended by journalist Uttam Kumar Nath, Anjan Saikia, Chitra Barua besides other dignitaries. The play will feature performances by actors such as Iramani Barua, Shailen Saikia, Champak Bora, Angarika Barua, Mouchumi Bora, Rajumani Hazarika, Biju Barkakaty, and Sagar Duwora, portraying various roles.
