GUWAHATI, Aug 29: Assam is embarking on a transformative journey in modernising urban planning practices with the announcement of a ‘Knowledge Hub’ and the forthcoming establishment of the ‘Assam Institute of Urban Affairs’. These initiatives, spearheaded by Housing and Urban Affairs minister Ashok Singhal, are set to bring cutting-edge urban planning concepts and expertise to the state, ushering in a new era of urban development.

Minister Ashok Singhal’s visionary leadership has revitalised the Urban Planning Cell within the Directorate of Town and Country Planning. This rejuvenated cell is driving revolutionary changes in urban planning methodologies. An advanced GIS Geo Hub has been introduced, employing state-of-the-art geographical information systems for comprehensive urban mapping. This technology-driven approach is revolutionising urban area mapping throughout Assam.

The next step for the Urban Planning Cell is the launch of the ‘Knowledge Hub’, a platform designed to foster the exchange of innovative ideas and advanced urban planning technologies. Experts from within the state and successful urban planning models like Gujarat and Telangana will collaborate within this hub. By leveraging their expertise, the ‘Knowledge Hub’ aims to craft transformative urban planning strategies tailored to Assam’s unique context.

In a move reminiscent of the esteemed National Institute of Urban Affairs in New Delhi, the Assam Institute of Urban Affairs is on the horizon. Similar to the success of the Assam Administrative Staff College, this institute will prioritise training and skill enhancement. The institute’s primary objective is to elevate the capabilities of officers in the Urban Affairs Department, elected representatives, and municipal officials. Through specialised training, participants will be equipped to tackle the latest technological trends and challenges in urban planning.

Minister Ashok Singhal presided over a significant meeting with the Directorate of Town and Country Planning at Janata Bhawan, where he deliberated on crucial matters and provided directives to drive these ambitious initiatives forward. The state government’s unwavering commitment to innovation and progress in urban planning is poised to reshape Assam’s urban landscape and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
