Dhemaji, 10 Oct: A workshop on âStrengthening Tribal Livelihoods through Sustainable Muga and Eri Culture in Arunachal Pradeshâ was organized at the Seely Farm conference hall in Arunachal Pradesh by the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, through the Central Muga Eri Research and Training Institute (CMER&TI), Lahdoigarh, Jorhat.
Dr. Diganta Meshe, scientist at the Lahdoigarh-based CMER&TI, Jorhat, delivered the welcome address. Speaking at the event, Ninong Ering, MLA of West Pasighat (37 Constituency), said that sericultureâparticularly Muga and Eri silkworm rearingâis one of the best ventures to ensure âdoubling of farmersâ incomeâ and achieving self-reliance. He emphasized that silk cultivation, along with yarn, fabric, and by-product production, has significantly contributed to poverty alleviation. He also remarked that both Muga and Eri cocoons produce nutritious pupae.

Among other speakers were Barnali Suri, Director of Sericulture and Handicrafts, Arunachal Pradesh; Dr. Kartik Neog, Director (C&MF and T.I.) of CMER&TI, Lahdoigarh; Dr. Nagesh S., Assistant Secretary, CSB-RO, Guwahati (TECH); and Yanung Jamoh Legu, herbal medicine expert of Arunachal Pradesh. They highlighted the multifaceted contributions of these two silk industries toward sustainable livelihood development.
Following the discussion, Muga and Eri rearers from various regions of Arunachal Pradesh shared their experiences, challenges, and benefits in sericulture and urged the government and administration to conduct more scientifically oriented training programs for silk farmers.
During the event, Nano Takung of Tekang village and Abi Zamang of Remi village were honored as the Best Eri Rearers, while Takir Talow of Ledum village and India Moyong of Linka village were awarded as the Best Muga Rearers of Arunachal Pradesh. The awards were presented by the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, through the CMER&TI, Lahdoigarh, Jorhat.
