GUWAHATI, March 7: Swagat Super Speciality Hospital, Maligaon, successfully facilitated the retrieval and transplantation of two kidneys from a deceased donor, marking one of the first such collaborations between a private healthcare institution and public medical authorities in the region. The donor Uttam Dey, tragically passed away, but his family’s compassionate decision to donate his kidneys and liver turned grief into hope. While the liver was deemed unsuitable for transplantation, the kidneys were swiftly retrieved during a late-night surgery on February 28, 2025. The organs were transported via a police-escorted green corridor in the early hours of March 1 to Gauhati Medical College, where the transplant team of the Urology Department was on standby and the two prepped recipients received the life-saving transplants. Both patients are now recovering, with the kidneys functioning optimally.

Led by Subhash Khanna, head of surgical disciplines, and Dr Ayushman Khanna, a multidisciplinary team of over 15 specialists executed the complex retrieval process. The effort included liver transplant experts Dr Amitabh Goswami, Dr Vikas Moond, Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Dr Gulab Singh Patel, Dr Ashwin R Krishnan and Dr Vibha Varma, and urology team was led by Dr Pushkal Bagchi and Dr Debanga Sarma along with Dr Hiranya Deka and Dr Sandeepan Borthakur. The anesthesia team was headed by Dr Shabbir Khan. Several key persons of Swagat management were involved in the process and that included COO Jahidur Rahman and Transplant Coordinator Ms. Sirajun Nessa and Operation Manager Mr. Bikash Baruah who ensured seamless coordination.
Khanna highlighted the historic nature of the procedure: “This is the first time a private hospital in Guwahati has retrieved organs from a deceased donor under the government’s framework. It underscores the power of collaboration in advancing healthcare.”
