SIVASAGAR, Oct 31: The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Asom (TAYPA) has strongly indicated a forthcoming significant agitation if the government continues to delay the conferment of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Tai Ahom community. During a press conference held at Sivasagar Tourists Lodge, TAYPA’s central committee president, Diganta Tamuly, emphasized the community’s substantial presence across 18 districts in Assam. He highlighted the inadequate political representation of the Tai Ahom community within the current political framework, attributing it to the deliberate neglect by the BJP-led government.
Tamuly pointed out that despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pre-election commitment to grant ST status to the community, the promise remains unfulfilled for over a decade. TAYPA expressed discontent at the government’s responsiveness, citing the allocation of a substantial Rs 6000 crore package to Dima Hasao in response to their violent agitation while ignoring the peaceful protests of the Tai Ahom community for their justified rights. To escalate awareness among the electorate, Tamuly mentioned plans to distribute 5 lakh pamphlets on the eve of the election, aiming to expose the party’s shortcomings.
Bhrigu Hatimuria, executive president, outlined the formation of a three-member committee by the central leadership to explore potential alternative political solutions to address the longstanding grievances of the Tai Ahom community, countering the perceived neglect by successive governments. Notable attendees at the meeting included Dipjyoti Duwora, Joint Secretary, Suraj Gogoi, Assistant Secretary, Ren Gogoi, Organizing Secretary, and Dulal Barua and Arun Rajkonwar, Cultural Secretaries. This move signifies a potentially significant shift in strategy and approach to address the community’s concerns and political representation.
