Tezpur commemorates Natasurya Phani Sarma on 54th death anniversary

TEZPUR, Aug 1: The 54th death anniversary of the legendary dramatist, actor, and cine artiste Natasurya Phani Sarma was commemorated by the Sonitpur district administration at his birthplace and workplace in Tezpur on Wednesday. The day-long program was organised in collaboration with Baan Theater at the Kalibari cremation ground.

The event commenced with the illumination of ceremonial lamps by Prithiviraj Rabha, MLA of Tezpur LAC, followed by Gaya Prasad Agarwala, district development commissioner, Garga Mohan Das, additional district commissioner, Ajit Sarma, the son of Phani Sarma, and Rubi Sarma, his daughter. Floral tributes were then offered in front of Phani Sarma’s statue by Barnali Barua, his daughter-in-law, Binita Sarma, Bhabananda Das, vice president of Baan Theater, Dilip Bora, Jitumani Devchaudhury, Ramesh Chandra Kalita, president of Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Saurabh Pani Phukan, district cultural development officer, Ankita Gogoi, DIPRO, and other representatives of various organisations.

Gaya Prasad Agarwala, the district development commissioner, delivered the welcome address, while Prithiviraj Rabha, MLA Tezpur LAC, presented a brief life sketch and recalled Phani Sarma’s contributions. Saurabh Pani Phukan highlighted the contributions of Phani Sarma, and Garga Mohan Das provided an update on the ongoing construction of the Natasurya Phani Sarma cremation site.

Mrigen Chandra Bora, vice president of Assam Natya Sanmilan, recited some historic dialogues from Phani Sarma’s dramas. The proceedings were conducted by Pankaj Barua, executive member of the Baan Theater Executive Committee.
