Tezpur University celebrates International Day of the Girl Child

TEZPUR, Oct 11: Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women’s Studies organised the International Day of the Girl Child at the council hall of the university on Tuesday.
Around 40 female students of Panchmile Higher Secondary School, Tezpur participated in the event. Dr. Madhurima Goswami, the head of the centre flagged off the event with an interactive welcome note where she intimated the students about the purpose of the event.
Students of various departments of Tezpur University presented inspiring and informative short films and a play for the school students. The students of Tezpur University were a part of CBCS course i.e. ‘Women’s Studies’ which is offered by the centre.
The short films and the play were eye openers for the school students as they demonstrated several girl child and women related issues prevailing in the society. These include resentment at girl childbirth, cybercrime against women, stigma against women playing sports and acid attacks. Interactive sessions after each performance were followed between the teachers, Tezpur University students and the school children. The female school students shared their personal experiences of discrimination they see and face in their homes and communities.
The Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women’s Studies has been celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child every year to educate and inspire girls about their rights, which will enable them to realise their full potential and transform the world around them and to address the challenges that they face and to celebrate the achievements of girls worldwide.
The event ended with a congenial vote of thanks from Dr. Mousumi Mahanta, assistant professor, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women’s Studies.
