Nagaon , Nov 05 : A kidney-selling racket has resurfaced in Hooj Kaibarta village of Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of three residents on Tuesday. Police action followed reports that several villagers had once again begun selling their kidneys to middlemen in exchange for money.
According to sources, the practice first came to light in 2021 when six to seven villagers secretly sold their kidneys through brokers. The issue subsided for some time after a few concerned residents intervened, but it has reportedly revived in recent months. Those who tried to stop the illegal trade faced threats and intimidation, locals said.
Villagers claimed that many residents were lured by promises of quick money and a comfortable life. Brokers allegedly targeted people in financial distress and arranged buyers through unverified medical networks outside the district. Reports indicate that a large section of the village population has already sold their kidneys.
Following the latest arrests, the village head and a group of women appealed to residents not to fall into the trap of organ brokers. They urged the administration to take strict action against those involved and to prevent further exploitation.
Police have detained three people in connection with the case, though further details about charges or the progress of the investigation are yet to be released.
