DISPUR, Dec 22: The total number of government appointments made during the tenure of the present Assam government has risen to 1,45,449, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday handing over appointment letters to 3,420 candidates in the health sector at a function held in Guwahati.
The appointment letters were issued to 1,403 technical and 595 non-technical candidates under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, 828 technical candidates under the Directorate of Health Services, 592 technical candidates under the Directorate of Health Services (Family Welfare), and two technical candidates under the Directorate of AYUSH.
With these appointments, the cumulative figure of government jobs provided by the state government has crossed 1.45 lakh, reinforcing its stated commitment to transparent and merit-based recruitment.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that after achieving the target of one lakh appointments, the government is now steadily moving towards its next goal of providing two lakh government jobs.
He announced that fresh appointments to Grade III posts through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination would be made on January 10 next year, while appointment letters for a large number of Grade IV posts would be issued before January 20.
He added that the process of issuing appointment letters to candidates already selected for various departments would continue till February.
Sarma said that no previous Assam government had been able to provide more than 25,000–30,000 government jobs in a five-year term.
To fulfil the pre-election promise of one lakh jobs, the first Cabinet of the present government constituted a sub-committee and prioritised recruitment in the Home, Health and Education departments.
Over the past four and a half years, this commitment has been steadily honoured, he said, adding that it has instilled confidence among the youth that hard work and sincerity can lead to secure government employment.
Highlighting reforms in the recruitment process, the chief minister said a new environment has emerged in Assam with systems put in place to ensure fair and transparent selection.
Referring to steps taken to strengthen the healthcare sector, he said the government is working towards establishing one medical college in every district, the impact of which is already visible in the gradual decline of maternal and infant mortality rates.
Sarma further said that several leading private hospitals are planning to set up facilities in Assam, which will generate new employment opportunities.
He also referred to major projects such as the semiconductor manufacturing unit at Jagiroad, the ammonia–urea project at Namrup and the proposed thermal power project at Chapar in Dhubri district, stating that these initiatives together would create employment for thousands of youths.
Alongside government jobs, the Chief Minister said the state has laid strong emphasis on self-employment through schemes such as Mukhyamantrir Atmanirbhar Assam, which have generated hope among young people.
He said that through clean recruitment practices, Assam has earned recognition across the country and the government has succeeded in building trust among the younger generation.
Addressing the newly appointed health department employees, Sarma said their responsibility is greater than that of many other government employees, as their work is directly linked to human lives.
He urged them to ensure that government hospitals provide accessible and dignified healthcare to the poor and underprivileged.
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the dedication of doctors and healthcare workers had strengthened public trust in government hospitals.
The chief minister also expressed concern over the rising number of children affected by cerebral palsy in the state, stressing the need for vigilance and high standards of care during childbirth to reduce preventable cases.
He said recruitment is not the final objective of the government, but a means to bring positive change in people’s lives, and appealed to the newly appointed employees to serve patients with compassion and a sense of duty.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
