DIPHU, Jan 30: A comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing rural income through the conservation and utilisation of plant genetic resources in Karbi Anglong was successfully conducted at AAU-Zonal Research Station in Diphu, on Monday.
The initiative, titled “Plant Genetic Resources of Karbi Anglong: Conservation and Utilisation for Enhancing Rural Income,” was organized in collaboration with ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi.

Sponsored by ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, the program was meticulously organised by AAU-Zonal Research Station, Diphu.
Dr K Dayamoy Singha, chief scientist at AAU-Zonal Research Station, emphasised the importance of preserving and utilising indigenous crops in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.
He informed the attendees about the biodiversity of these crops, highlighting their nutritional, medicinal values, and significant antioxidant content, making them valuable in both national and international markets.
Principal scientist and nodal officer for North Eastern Hills (NEH), Dr SK Malik, along with Technical Officer from ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, OP Dhariwal, shared insights into the importance of indigenous crops naturally growing in the region.
They also encouraged farmers to cultivate traditional crops and explore the market demand for these commodities on both national and international levels, ultimately contributing to the income of small and marginal farmers through unique agricultural products.
The training program was attended by Pr Scientist (Econ), Dr M Maibangsa; Technical Officer, Taposhree Das; and Scientist, Dr Neethi Baruah.
As part of the initiative, agricultural implements were distributed to the participating farmers, providing practical support for the implementation of the knowledge gained during the training.
