Tezpur, Oct 18: On the one-month death anniversary of Zubeen Garg, the beloved artist of Assam, students of Tezpur University paid heartfelt tribute today. After planting saplings on the university campus in his memory, the students organized a large procession within the university premises.
Each participating group in the procession represented one of Zubeen da’s music albums, carrying placards bearing the names of his songs. In a tribute to the artist, the students also arranged a special screening of the film “Tumi Mor Matho Mor” in front of the university’s administrative building.
Gathered at the university’s main gate, the students raised slogans of “Zubeen Garg Amar Houk” (Long Live Zubeen Garg).
It is noteworthy that following Zubeen Garg’s death, the university administration had rejected the students’ request to hold a condolence meeting and suspend classes. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor, Shambhunath Singh, made derogatory remarks about Zubeen Garg. Since then, students have been staging intense protests against the Vice-Chancellor and the university authorities.
For nearly a month, democratic protests involving students, teachers, and staff have been ongoing every evening on campus. Amid these protests, issues of financial irregularities within the university and the administrative failures of Vice-Chancellor Shambhunath Singh have come to light.
Continuing their protest, the students paid tribute today to the beloved artist of their hearts.
