DIPHU, July 18: Two persons have died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Karbi Anglong district, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Ruplin Terangpi (9) of Chowkihola and Bina Acharjee (23) of Dharamnala, Diphu.
Joint Director of Health Services, Karbi Anglong, Dr Borsing Rongpi said JE cases are on the rise in the district.
He informed that both victims had not taken the JE vaccine, despite the disease being preventable.
He explained that JE is spread by mosquitoes which become carriers after feeding on infected animals like pigs and goats.
Once a person is bitten by such mosquitoes, they risk infection.
Dr Rongpi said symptoms of JE include fever, severe headache, vomiting and mental irritation.
He urged that patients showing such symptoms should be taken to the hospital immediately.
Treatment for JE is available at Diphu Medical College & Hospital and other hospitals and health centres.
As of Thursday, 23 patients were admitted at DMC&H, of whom 15 have been discharged, he said.
The official advised the public to adopt precautionary measures to avoid mosquito bites.
