BISWANATH CHARIALI, June 8: A wave of shock and grief swept through Chandra Bheti in the southern part of Sootea on Saturday afternoon following the tragic drowning of two minor boys. The incident occurred when two cousins — Ajay Mandal (15) and Bipul Mandal (17) — lost their lives after drowning in a village pond in Chandra Bheti.
According to reports, Ajay Mandal jumped into the pond in an attempt to cool off from the scorching summer heat. However, he unknowingly ventured into the deeper section of the pond and began to drown. Bipul Mandal, who was watching from the banks, immediately leapt in to rescue his cousin but also got caught in the depths, leading to a double tragedy.

Hearing the cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene and jumped into the pond in a desperate bid to rescue the boys. They managed to retrieve Bipul Mandal and, along with a team from Sootea Police, rushed him to Biswanath Chariali District Hospital. However, he was declared dead upon arrival. Shortly after, the body of Ajay Mandal was also recovered from the pond.
Following the recovery, both bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area, with residents mourning the untimely demise of the two young boys.
