SIVASAGAR, July 7: Ujoni Asom Muslim Kalyan Parishad (UAMKP), through a release, welcomed the state government’s decision to accord indigenous status to five Muslim communities- Garia, Moria, Desi, Jolah, and Sayeed. Expressing sincere gratitude to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, executive president Manirul Islam Bora and secretary Ahidur Rahman Chowdhury of UAMKP said that the government’s decision has justified their long-standing demand and their protracted agitation for the recognition since 1994. They urged the government to include these communities in the OBC category and to entitle them the special privileges under the Constitution. UAMKP, they said, had been raising the demand since the then chief minister HIteswar Saikia. But neither the Congress government nor the AGP government did anything in this regard. But when the UAMKP approached CM Himanta Biswa Sarma with their petition, the chief minister promptly formed seven sub-committees to submit their recommendations following which the government decided to grant the special status.
