KOKRAJHAR, Nov 9: People from diverse communities paid floral tributes to Ustaad Kamini Kumar Narzary, the legendary Bodo dance exponent and the first tribal recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1981), on his 99th birth anniversary on Sunday.
Born on November 9, 1926, in Bamunkhura village, Kokrajhar district, Narzary was a master of Bagurumba and a distinguished dramatist, folk singer, director, performer and cultural activist. He dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Bodo traditional arts, including Jatra Gaon, Bagurumba and Bardwisikhla, earning recognition for Bagurumba as one of India’s most graceful dance traditions in 1955.
The event, organised by Phitikha, a Bodo literary group also featured the unveiling of a research book on “Life History of Ustaad Kamini Kumar Narzary.” Raju Kumar Narzary, general secretary of the UPPL, lauded Narzary’s contributions, highlighting his pivotal role in promoting Bodo dance and heritage on national and international platforms.
He noted that Ustaad Narzary’s efforts in teaching and mentoring young performers ensured the thriving of vibrant Bodo dance forms across Assam and Bengal, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
