KHERONI, Dec 13: “Joy Zubeen da” (Hail/Victory to Zubeen-da) resonated from the stage as popular Bollywood playback singer Vishal Mishra paid tribute to the late Assamese singing icon Zubeen Garg while performing at the Falcon Festival in Umrangso. The heartfelt homage came on the very day a charge sheet was filed with Mishra recalling Zubeen da while singing the song ‘Mayabini’.
The Falcon Festival held annually in Umrangso, Dima Hasao district, is a premier event in the Northeast aimed at raising awareness about the conservation of migratory birds, particularly the Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis). These birds migrate from South Africa, East Africa and Siberia, crossing the Arabian Sea and reach the region around the end of October. The festival coincides with the arrival of migratory birds, adding a unique charm to the scenic hill district.
On Saturday, Vishal Mishra, as composer and singer, captivated the audience, interspersing his performance with repeated shouts of “Joy Zubeen Da.” The audience joined in, singing ‘Mayabini’ together, creating an emotional moment at the festival. The festivities continue with performances by popular singers Shilpa Rao and Nikita Gandhi, promising more musical highlights as the Falcon Festival celebrates both culture and wildlife conservation.
