Workshop on ‘Preparation of Eco-Friendly Holi Colours’

NAGAON, Feb 28: A workshop titled “Preparation of Eco-Friendly Holi Colours” was successfully conducted at Dhing College on Saturday. The workshop was organised by the Eco Club and Department of Botany under the Environment Education Programme (EEP), an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. The workshop was sponsored by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Govt of Assam, promoting sustainable Holi practices.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika, who in his inaugural speech stretched on the need and importance of using organic holi colours. The other faculty members present in the workshop were Dr Snigdha Mahanta, vice Principal, Dr Nandan Kumar Borthakur, and Gobin Chandra Bharali.

Dr Biman Hazarika, Principal, Dhing College, also inaugurated the draft copy of ‘The beginner’s guide to organic holi’. The resource person present in the workshop was noted manuscript painter Mridu Mocham Bora, recipient of ‘Asom Gaurav’. He emphasised integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems, urging a shift from toxic chemical colours to natural plant-based alternatives like turmeric and beetroot extracts.

Eco Club Coordinator Dr Sanjeeb Kumar Nath outlined the workshop’s focus on practical demonstrations to curb festival pollution, aligning with ASTEC’s statewide eco-initiatives. He highlighted the Botany Department’s initiative, “PrakritiAbir,” the organic Holi which was launch on February 25, 2026, inspiring youth-led sustainability. The other resource persons included Dr Paramita Chakravarty and Sampurna Kashyap, who gave a detail on organic Holi preparation process.

Over 60 students participated in hands-on training on colour extraction from plant materials and filler base preparation for organic Holi colours. The hands-on training was led by Dr Nath, Dr Chakravarty and Sampurna Kashyap, who demonstrated eco-friendly Holi preparation methods and applications.
