Workshop promotes paper upcycling in West Karbi Anglong

76 teachers trained in recycling techniques at Dongkamokam school

KHERONI, March 4: A day-long science-based workshop focused on environmental sustainability was organised on Monday at Vosho Koida English High School in Dongkamokam, West Karbi Anglong.

The initiative was funded and supported by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) and the Department of Climate Change. The event was conducted in collaboration with the West Karbi Anglong District Eco-Club Nodal Agency and the Rongkhang Block.

The primary theme of the workshop was “Upcycling of Waste Paper to Reusable Paper.” The objective was to provide practical training on the techniques and methods required to transform discarded paper into functional recycled products.

A total of 76 teachers participated, representing 36 schools from across four blocks. The programme was hosted by Vosho Koida English High School.

The programme was moderated by Biren Deka, coordinator of the District Nodal Agency (Rongkhang Block) and officially inaugurated by Mohansing Ronghang, principal of Vosho Koida English High School.

Expert guidance was provided by state-level trainers Phunu Sarma and Jadav Chandra Das, who served as resource persons. Additionally, Pranab Sarma, coordinator of the Aryabhatta Science Centre (West Karbi Anglong), addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of innovative recycling methods in modern education.

During the workshop, the 76 participating teachers engaged in practical sessions and successfully produced recycled paper on-site. The educators expressed enthusiasm and shared their insights on the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of the process.

The trained teachers have committed to taking these skills back to their respective schools. They plan to organise similar workshops within their local Eco-Clubs to train students in the art of paper upcycling and foster a culture of waste management and environmental consciousness among the youth.
