GUWAHATI, June 16: Bharti Airtel has announced a major technological intervention to curb the growing menace of online fraud in Assam and the Northeast, revealing that its AI-powered fraud detection system has already shielded over 1.35 million users across the region within just 33 days of its launch.
According to an official statement, the system, which has been automatically enabled for all Airtel mobile and broadband users, identifies and blocks malicious links shared via SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, email, and web browsers in real time.
The platform scans more than one billion URLs daily and is capable of blocking harmful sites in under 100 milliseconds.
Citing an example, the statement said that if a user in Guwahati receives a message with a fraudulent delivery link—such as “Your package is delayed. Track it here: http://www.tracky0urparcell.com”—the system scans the link upon access.
If deemed suspicious, it instantly blocks the site and redirects the user to a warning page that reads: “Blocked! Airtel found this site dangerous!”
This real-time response mechanism has helped protect users from phishing, fake deliveries, and fraudulent banking alerts, particularly in high-risk zones such as Guwahati, Shillong, Kohima, Itanagar, and remote districts including Morigaon, Nagaon, and Dhubri.
Commenting on the rollout, Rabi Shankar Mishra, CEO – Assam and Northeast, Bharti Airtel, said, “We are thrilled to advance our efforts in combating all emerging digital threats. Today, we are pleased to introduce the world’s first AI-driven fraud detection solution integrated into our network infrastructure. We are confident that this solution will serve as a significant differentiator and provide a completely new, safe, and secure digital experience for customers in the Assam and Northeast region.”
The AI system is designed to operate silently in the background, requires no installation by users, and is provided free of cost.
Significantly, it offers fraud alerts in local languages including Assamese, ensuring greater effectiveness among populations with limited English proficiency or digital literacy.
The initiative assumes importance as Assam and the Northeast continue to emerge as digitally progressive regions, with increasing reliance on online banking, education, and government e-services.
Airtel’s new safeguard aims to ensure that users across age groups—whether professionals, students, senior citizens, or homemakers—can engage with the digital world more safely.
The company’s official statement described the solution as a “statewide digital shield” that is helping to create a secure digital environment for both urban and rural communities.
