Istambul, April 2: A tragic fire erupted at the Masquerade nightclub in Istanbul during refurbishment activities on Tuesday, leading to at least 29 fatalities, as per official statements and reports. Several people, including the club’s managers, are currently in custody for questioning.
The office of the Istanbul governor revealed that one person is under medical care following the incident. The nightclub, located in the Besiktas district on the European side of Istanbul within a 16-story residential building, was shut for remodelling when the fire broke out.
Governor Davut Gul, addressing the incident, stated that investigations to identify the cause of the fire are underway, with early signs suggesting that those involved in the refurbishment activities were the victims.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced that five people, including the club’s managers and a person supervising the renovations, are detained for interrogation.
Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stressed that the authorities are carrying out comprehensive inspections of the entire building to ascertain its safety. Several firefighting and medical teams were deployed to the location to manage the crisis.
