New York city struck by 4.7 magnitude earthquake

New York, April 5: An unusual seismic event occurred on Friday when a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit the New York City region. The earthquake’s epicentre was near Lebanon, New Jersey, according to the US Geological Survey.

No immediate damage was reported. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, however, measured the quake at 5.5 magnitude. New York Mayor Eric Adams has been briefed on the situation, with his spokesperson stating they are still evaluating the impact. Residents in Brooklyn experienced a loud sound and shaking buildings.

Shaking was also felt in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut, and other areas on the East Coast. New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the quake was felt state-wide and that her team is assessing any potential damage.

This event follows the August 23, 2011 earthquake of 5.8 magnitude, the strongest to hit the East Coast since World War II, which affected people from Georgia to Canada.
