New Delhi, Dec 28: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on December 28 announced that a Qatari court has reduced the sentences for eight former Indian Navy officers detained in Qatar over the Dahra Global case.
The Qatari Court has shifted their sentences from the death penalty to jail terms. The MEA is awaiting a comprehensive verdict on the matter and is in close communication with the legal team in Qatar.
The detainees had been held since October 2022 on suspicion of spying on a submarine project. The Ministry reported two hearings in the case earlier this month. The Qatar Court of First Instance has also issued a ruling against the detainees.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, where they had a positive conversation regarding the bilateral relationship and the welfare of the Indian community in Qatar.
