New Delhi, May 23: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has volunteered to undergo a polygraph test, alleging victim shaming by her party in connection with an assault incident at the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence. In an interview with ANI on Thursday, Maliwal recounted the alleged assault that occurred on May 13 and criticized AAP and Delhi Minister Atishi for their handling of the situation.
Maliwal drew a poignant comparison to the victim shaming experienced by Nirbhaya, stating, “I have met Nirbhaya’s mother and she said one thing, which I could never forget in my life. She told me that sometimes I feel like it is good that my daughter is no longer in this world because at least she did not have to go through all the humiliation that exists in this country during the journey towards justice.” Maliwal emphasized that victim shaming is a pervasive issue affecting many girls in India.
Addressing the controversy over video clips leaked by AAP, which purportedly show her arguing with security personnel at the Chief Minister’s residence, Maliwal questioned their credibility. She noted that the Delhi Police had not received the CCTV footage and expressed doubts about its authenticity. Maliwal argued that her emotional response and distress following the assault were natural and condemned the focus on her physical state as an act of victim shaming.
Maliwal also criticized remarks by a Delhi minister, who questioned the lack of visible injuries on her, describing it as an extreme form of victim shaming. She asserted that she had accurately detailed the events in her FIR and called for a polygraph test to substantiate her claims.
