Pune, May 27: Two doctors from Sassoon Hospital in Pune, including the head of the forensics department, have been arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence related to a deadly crash involving a Porsche, a senior police official informed India Today on Monday.
The arrests followed revelations that blood samples of the minor involved in the accident were switched with those of another individual who had not consumed alcohol. On May 19, the day of the accident, the minor was brought to Sassoon Hospital for a medical check-up at 11 am. Initial reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) indicated no presence of alcohol in the minor’s blood, arousing suspicion.
Further investigation revealed alcohol in the minor’s system through a second blood report. DNA tests confirmed the samples were from two different individuals, implicating the hospital doctors in evidence tampering to protect the juvenile accused.
The Pune Porsche crash case has been fraught with controversy, including allegations of preferential treatment and connections to the underworld surrounding the accused’s family. The minor, suspected of driving the Porsche under the influence of alcohol, was initially granted bail but later remanded to an observation home until June 5 following public outcry.
The accused’s father, a real estate developer, and grandfather have also been arrested on charges of attempting to bribe and threaten the family’s driver to take responsibility for the accident. The crash resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals, Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, when the speeding Porsche struck their bike.
In response to the handling of the case, the victims’ families have called for a Supreme Court-monitored probe and trial, expressing concerns over potential miscarriages of justice.
