The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that at least three weather stations in Delhi recorded maximum temperatures of 49 degrees Celsius or higher. Specifically, Mungeshpur and Narela reached a sweltering 49.9 degrees Celsius, while Najafgarh closely followed at 49.8 degrees Celsius.

The IMD’s assessment indicated that “heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed over most parts of Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, as well as isolated pockets in Bihar and Himachal Pradesh.”

Churu in Rajasthan emerged as the hottest location in the country, recording a maximum temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius. Sirsa-AWS in Haryana recorded 50.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Mungeshpur and Narela in Delhi at 49.9 degrees Celsius, Najafgarh at 49.8 degrees Celsius, Sirsa at 49.5 degrees Celsius, Ganganagar in Rajasthan at 49.4 degrees Celsius, and Pilani and Phalodi in Rajasthan, along with Jhansi, all registering 49 degrees Celsius.

The extreme heatwave prompted the Haryana government to initiate summer vacations early, starting Tuesday, for all state-run and private schools, in an effort to safeguard students from the intense heat.

However, there may be some relief on the horizon. The IMD has forecasted a potential break in the heatwave conditions after May 30, offering hope for cooler temperatures ahead.
