Ayodhya, Jan 20: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, has noticed the circulation of unverified and potentially disruptive messages ahead of the Ram Mandir’s consecration ceremony.
The messages, particularly prevalent on social media, could potentially disturb communal harmony and public order. In response, the Ministry issued an advisory on Saturday to all media outlets, including newspapers, television channels, digital news publishers, and social media platforms.
They advised against the publication or broadcasting of any false, manipulated, or potentially disruptive content. Social media platforms, in particular, have been reminded of their due diligence obligations, including making reasonable efforts to avoid hosting, displaying, or publishing such information.
The advisory points to the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995, and the Press Council of India’s Norms of Journalistic Conduct under the Press Council Act, 1978.
The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, also refer to these provisions.
