New Delhi, May 20: India has declared a day of mourning on Tuesday, May 21, to honor the memory of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash. Alongside President Raisi, the crash claimed the lives of the country’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and seven other officials.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the solemn occasion on Monday, expressing condolences for the loss. In an official statement, the MHA declared, “As a mark of respect to the departed souls, the Government of India has declared a one-day state mourning on May 21, 2024 (Tuesday) throughout the country.”
During the state mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is regularly displayed, and official entertainment will be suspended as a gesture of reverence.
The tragic incident unfolded as the charred wreckage of the helicopter was discovered after overnight search and rescue efforts. Reports indicated that adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains and fog, had hindered the rescue team’s access to the crash site on Sunday evening.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to Iran, affirming India’s solidarity with the nation in their time of grief. Similarly, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described President Raisi’s passing as “shocking,” reflecting on the profound loss felt by the international community.
