GUWAHATI, March 16: The James Dyson Award 2025, an international competition aimed at fostering innovation in design and engineering, is now open for submissions.
Students and recent graduates from 28 countries and regions are invited to present problem-solving ideas that could improve lives.
Since its inception in 2005, the award has provided over £1 million (approximately Rs 112 crore) in prize money to support more than 400 student inventions.
The global winner, chosen by James Dyson himself, will receive £30,000 (approximately Rs 30 lakh), along with international media exposure that could help turn their invention into a commercial success.
Sir James Dyson, founder of Dyson, highlighted the competition’s impact over the past two decades, emphasizing the role of young designers in tackling global challenges.
“The brilliant ideas we’ve seen prove that young people are passionate about solving the world’s most pressing problems using design, engineering, and technology,” he said.
Previous winners have demonstrated the award’s potential to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions.
In 2024, India’s national winner was Novocarry, a portable cooling carrier designed by Odisha-based Komal Panda to keep insulin and other liquid medications at the ideal temperature.
The recognition from the James Dyson Award has helped Panda refine the product for broader accessibility.
Other past winners include mOm incubators, a low-cost, inflatable neonatal incubator designed by UK-based James Roberts.
The invention has already supported over 10,000 patients and continues to expand globally, including in conflict zones such as Ukraine.
Another notable innovation is SoaPen, a colorful soap pen designed by Parsons School of Design graduates Shubham Issar and Amanat Anand.
Initially a runner-up in the U.S., SoaPen has since launched in the U.S. market, making hand hygiene fun and accessible for children.
Entries for the 2025 edition must be submitted by midnight on July 16.
National judging panels will assess submissions based on functionality, design process, uniqueness, and commercial potential.
The National Winners, each receiving £5,000 (approximately Rs 5 lakh), will be announced on September 10. The Global Top 20 Shortlist, selected by Dyson engineers, will be revealed on October 15, with the Global Winners announced by James Dyson on November 5.
