New Delhi, May 30: On May 30, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced her concern regarding the tragic firecracker incident that marred Lord Jagannath’s Chandan Yatra festival in Puri, Odisha. The incident resulted in severe burn injuries to numerous individuals when a series of firecrackers exploded during the festivities.
Banerjee expressed her solidarity and sympathy via social media, stating, “Shocked to know about the devastating firecracker incident at Puri during Lord Jagannath’s Chandan Yatra, leading to injury of several persons. Pray to the Lord for their quick and complete recovery. Solidarity to Odisha Government.”
The incident occurred during the ‘Chapa Khela’ event at Narendra Pond, a highlight of the Chandan Yatra celebrations. Hundreds of devotees had gathered to watch the traditional water sports when sparks from the firecrackers unexpectedly showered down, causing injuries.
Over 20 individuals sustained injuries, with several in critical condition. Immediate medical response was provided, and all injured were swiftly transported to the district headquarters hospital. Due to the absence of a dedicated burn unit, 18 critical patients were later transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Additional patients requiring specialized care were moved to hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
