Mevani Arrest: Congress Stages Sit-In Seeking Release

KOKRAJHAR, April 23: Opposition leaders from Congress and AIUDF parties are making a beeline in Kokrajhar police station following the arrest of Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday.

A three-member delegation team of Congress party led by Nowboisha LAC and former minister Bharat Chandra Narah, South Salmara MLA Wajed Ali Choudhury, Youth Congress secretary Ajay Sikra visited at Kokrajhar police station, but police administration obstructed the delegation while entering the police station.

Narah, while condemning the police action, said that the arrest of MLA was unacceptable and unfortunate for the country.

He demanded immediate release of Mevani.

However, Congress party members and supporters have staged a sit-in protest demonstration in front of the Kokrajhar police station demanding immediate release of Mevani.

An APCC release said the state party chief Bhupen Borah, three MLAs and members of its legal cell would leave for Kokrajhar on Sunday morning as Mevani would be produced in the court again at the end of his police remand.

The release added that the party had been lending all assistance to Mevani to ensure that he was represented by the best lawyers.

Meanwhile, two AIUDF MLAs Karimuddin Borbhuyan and Ashraful Hussain visited the Kokrajhar police station and took stock of the situation. The duo also demanded early release of Mevani.

Mevani, an Independent MLA supported by the Congress, was apprehended by the Assam Police from Palanpur town in Gujarat on Wednesday night after a First Information Report (FIR) under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act was filed in Kokrajhar over the tweet.

According to the FIR, he had purportedly posted a tweet, claiming Prime Minister Narendra Modi “considered Godse as God”.

The legislator was flown to Guwahati from Gujarat on Thursday morning and then taken to Kokrajhar by road, where he was produced at the chief judicial magistrate’s court, which remanded him in three days’ police custody.
