Raipur, April 16: In a joint operation carried out by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the District Reserve Guard (DRG) in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, at least 18 extremists, including a top Naxal leader, were neutralised on Tuesday.
The leader, identified as Shankar Rao, had a bounty of Rs 25 lakhs on his head. The operation also resulted in injuries to three security personnel. Officials reported recovery of 18 bodies from the encounter site, with the possibility of the death toll increasing.
They also seized a large cache of weapons, including seven AK-47 assault rifles and three light machine guns.
The encounter in the Maad area comes days before the Lok Sabha elections. The polling in Kanker is scheduled for April 26 in the second phase.
