IMPHAL, Mar 23: A violent confrontation erupted in Manipur on March 22, when a group of 15 to 20 individuals, suspected to be from the Arambai Tenggol (AT) group, allegedly stormed the residence of Irengbam Nandakumar Singh, a 56-year-old alleged functionary of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF).
The incident, which took place in Kongpal Chingangbam Leikai near Kongpal Thong, led to a fierce clash between the two groups.
During the altercation, four cadres of the UNLF(P) sustained blunt force injuries, reportedly inflicted using sticks. Additionally, there were reports of gunfire being exchanged between both factions, though it remains unclear whether anyone sustained injuries from the gunshots.
Security forces responded swiftly to the incident, deploying personnel to the site to restore order. The injured UNLF(P) cadres were immediately detained and transported to a hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, their injuries were limited to blunt trauma, and no gunshot wounds were reported. Their condition is currently stable, with no immediate danger to their lives.
Following the violent clash, security forces launched a raid on the office of Arambai Tenggol Unit-17 Khurai in Imphal East district. During the operation, various incriminating items were seized, including hunting boots, four-wheelers, bulletproof plates, helmets, jackets, and banners associated with AT-Unit 17. Additionally, law enforcement officers recovered approximately 15 grams of a substance suspected to be heroin, along with rifle slings, tactical belts, mobile phones, magazine pouches, wireless handsets, tear gas smoke shells, bayonets, swords, and used cartridges. The seizure of live rounds and other military gear suggests a well-equipped outfit with potential militant activities.
In separate security operations conducted on the same day, authorities confiscated a significant cache of arms and ammunition across different locations. In Imphal East, they seized SBBL (Single Barrel Breech Loading) guns, improvised projectile launchers (Pompi), and locally made SBBL guns along with ammunition.
From Henbung village in Senapati district, bolt action single-barrel guns and bore ammunition were recovered. Further raids in Kangpokpi district at K Langhnom and Khengjang led to the seizure of Pompi guns, rockets, and country-made projectile-launching weapons.
