SENAPATI, May 28 (NNN): The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has strongly condemned the incident on May 24 at Kwakeithel Bazaar near Asian Hospital in Imphal, where four of  their members were assaulted by valley based mob consisting of both men and women on their way to the only airport in the state to travel to Mumbai. The NWU alleged that the four women were halted and forcibly dragged down from the vehicle by their hair. Their clothes, including undergarments were ripped, they were beaten by iron rod and their luggages were destroyed.

The NWU said that the mob assaulted the four women even after identifying themselves as Tangkhuls. They were also threatened by armed personnel with a loaded gun if they moved. The women were traumatized physically and mentally and were treated at Health Care Diagnostic Centre, Mumbai, the NWU added.

The NWU then passionately denounced the “bitter act” of attacking women with incriminating tools. “It is too ugly to learn that our state is ruled by mobs and women are unsafe even in broad daylight,” it also said. The NWU also expressed dismay on the irresponsible IPS officers, AK. Jhalajit Singh, incharge of Central Control Room, 1st MR, Imphal, for claiming the incident as false.

Seeing and hearing repeated excuses and apologies after the attack, NWU then expressed their doubt over which might be a deliberate effort to pacify and justify the barbaric act.

The NWU then urged the concerned authority to prioritise in bringing justice and carry out their duty responsibly and diligently in the good interest of the public at the earliest if the rule of law still prevailed.
