KOHIMA, AUGUST 7: The 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) has severely criticized the August 6 decision of the Nagaland State Cabinet as just a reiteration of the previous June 12 resolution. The committee says that the new decision again does not touch upon their basic issues against the Backward Tribe (BT) reservation policy.
In a press release made from its camp office at Dimapur, the committee was disappointed in the state government’s action to go ahead with constituting the Reservation Review Commission. The addition of civil society organizations like the Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC), Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), and the Tenyimi Union Nagaland (TUN) was questioned in particular.
The committee contended that engaging these CSOs indicates a partisan attitude by the government and is not an indication of serious engagement with the complaints made by the five tribes that are requesting a review of Nagaland’s 48-year-old reservation policy.
Additional criticism was levelled against the government spokesperson, whose recent media briefing has been labelled as unhelpful and misleading. The committee charged him with utilising “wild imaginary figures” to justify the existing reservation pattern and with misidentifying the commission’s work with the result of the next census. “The spokesperson’s statements have only added insult to our movement,” the statement added.
Keeping in view the recent happenings, the 5 Tribes CoRRP declared intentions to hold a combined meeting with the top governing bodies of all five tribes involved in order to discuss their future course of action.
