IMPHAL, June 28 (NNN): After Manipur chief minister Biren Singh told the media that the Union Home minister would handle the law and order in the hills while the former would look after the same in the valley region, there have been strong reactions from the valley based civil society organisations.
After a meeting with the Union Home minister Amit Shah late on Sunday, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh told reporters, upon his arrival at Imphal airport late on Sunday that he was instructed to handle the law and order situation in the valley while the Union Home minister would take responsibility for the law and order in the hill districts.
Joining the chorus slamming the concept of the Centre, National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) and United People’s Front (UPF) on Tuesday said they are strongly against any form of “defecto” separation of administration in the state of Manipur.
Addressing reporters at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, advisor of NIPCO Sunil Karam said that it is very unfortunate that the chief minister of the state made such a statement when the people are shouting against separate administration demands raised by 10 MLAs from the Kuki community.
“We are against any form of de facto separation of administration in the state. We will not accept such a concept,” Karam said.
The NIPCO advisor expressed strong dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Centre and the state government handle the crisis unfolding in the state.
He said that it is now a well-established fact that the Kuki militants under the tripartite Suspension of Operation (SoO) truce with the Centre and state government are involved in the conflict.
It has been an open secret that the Kuki based militants got the support of the Central security forces, particularly the Assam Rifles, Sunil Karam alleged.
Even though he visited the state after 26 days, the Union Home minister had not taken any significant measures to resolve the issue, Sunil added.
He also said that, instead, the Union Home minister seemed to come up with another divisive game in the state when the chief minister was instructed to take responsibility of the law and order in the valley region and the Centre handling the same in the hill districts.
The press conference was also attended by NIPCO president Oinam Premjit and UPF president Nongthombam Rupachandra.
The two leaders alleged that the statement given by the chief minister after a meeting with the Union Home minister in Delhi indicated that there have already been two administrations in Manipur.
Rupachandra demanded the chief minister must clarify the statement he had made to the media.
Both the leaders appealed to all the people particularly the civil society organisations and political parties to sort out all the differences and stand up together for a common cause.
