GUWAHATI, Jan 16: Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday asked senior officials of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited to give prioritize employment of locals while implementing the Dibang Multipurpose Project.
The proposed 278 metre high Dibang Multipurpose Project that will come up in Munli village in the state’s Lower Dibang Valley district, will be the country’s highest dam. It will be constructed approximately 1.5km upstream of the confluence of Ashu Pani and Dibang rivers. The total catchment area for the project will be 11,276km².
Khandu, in a meeting with NHPC officials at his official residence in Itanagar on Tuesday, discussed the current status of the project, the construction of which will begin soon.
The Dibang Multipurpose Project will have an installed capacity of 2,880MW, making it the biggest hydropower facility in the country.
“Slated to be India’s highest dam, the proposed 278-metre high Dibang Multipurpose Project, is soon to begin its massive construction phase,” said the Arunachal CM in a post on ‘X’.
“Executive Director of @nhpcltd, Dibang Basin HEP, along with other officials, paid a visit to me in the presence of Chief Secretary Shri Dharmendra and Shri Atek Miyu, SE, Hydropower Dept,” he further said.
“Discussed current status of the project and emphasized that NHPC should address local concerns. Furthermore, urged the officials to give priority to residents for job opportunities and other engaging activities,” Khandu said on ‘X’.
The NHPC will implement the multipurpose project at an estimated investment of £3.26bn ($4bn).
The Union government’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved £186m ($232m) for pre-investment expenditure on the project in July 2019.
The Dibang Multipurpose Project is expected to generate up to 11,222 million units (MU) of electricity a year, while moderating flood to the extent of 3000m³/s in the downstream areas during the monsoon.
