Gangtok, Dec 19: Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the State level Sakewa Celebration 2022 organised by Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh, Sikkim (AKRSS) at Dalapchand, Pakyong district.
Sakewa is one of the most significant cultural and religious festivals of the Kirat Khambu Rai community in Sikkim, celebrated as homage to Mother Earth. The Kirat Rai people are believed to be some of the most ancient people of Himalayas. They are said to be nature worshippers and this tradition of theirs offering reverence to nature Gods, praying for the well-being of all living creatures around the world, has been existing since ancient times.
Addressing the gathering the chief minister applauded the work done by the AKRSS and emphasised on the importance of celebrating Sakewa. He added that AKRSS has been the longest serving associations in Sikkim, working tirelessly for past three decades for the upliftment of the Kirat community.
CM Tamang assured full cooperation to construct holy shrines of Rai community wherever it is required. He mentioned that the demands placed by the Rai community have been considered and shall be fulfilled by the State Government.
Further, he also informed about various upcoming construction of Regional Linguistic Centre in different districts and requested the locals to preserve and use it commercially, benefiting the locals and the entire community. The celebration saw an array of musical presentation. Various ministers, MLAs, district panchayats, officials and the local public attended the Sakewa celebration.
