AGARTALA, Aug 5: In a scathing critique of both the ruling BJP and its ally Tipra Motha Party, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday asserted that the CPI(M) has regained significant ground in Tripura and is firmly on the path to reclaiming power.
Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury, who also serves as the CPI(M) state committee secretary, said the real strength of political parties is reflected in public support at the grassroots, not through alliances formed in Delhi.
“One should not measure political strength by who they are having tea with in the capital. It’s the people on the ground who decide,” Chaudhury remarked, taking a veiled dig at the growing ties between the BJP and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Manikya Debbarma.
Referring to Debbarma’s recent warning to approach the Supreme Court over the delay in village council elections, Chaudhury questioned the sincerity of the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance.
“Pradyot threatens legal action while being in alliance with the BJP. Who are they trying to mislead? This exposes their doublespeak. Unlike them, CPI(M) has remained consistent and committed to the people,” he said.
Chaudhury also accused the BJP of insulting the linguistic and cultural identities of both indigenous and Bengali communities in the state.
“Calling Bengali a Bangladeshi language is an affront to our heritage. Amit Malviya from the BJP IT Cell even went as far as to say Bengali isn’t a language. This shows the BJP’s true face — communal and divisive,” he added.
He further claimed that internal rifts have emerged between the BJP and Tipra Motha, with both sides trying to protect their own political relevance at the expense of development.
“For a period, misinformation sidelined the CPI(M), but that phase is over. People now see through the rhetoric. We have regained the people’s trust, and there is no doubt CPI(M) will return to power,” Chaudhury concluded confidently.
