IMPHAL, Oct 26: Two women were swept away as heavy rains accompanied by strong wind wreaked havoc in several parts of Manipur in the last two days.
Official reports said that two women of Poi village in Ukhrul district were swept away by the strong water current of Tholiru stream of Challou River on Monday evening, around 4.50 pm.
The two women have been identified as RS Ngamreila (30), wife of RS Varechung and RK Ramreila (34), wife of RK Mathotmi of Poi village.
Villagers said that they were swept away after they were hit by sudden swelling of the stream due to continuous heavy rain while crossing the stream.
The women faced the unfortunate incident while returning home from their paddy fields.
The villagers immediately rushed to the spot and swung into action to search them. But, due to the heavy downpour and strong water current, the victims could not be traced till late evening.
Meanwhile, teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the village and joined the villagers in the search for the two women.
Reports also said that strong wind and heavy rain triggered by Cyclone Sitrang caused widespread damages to houses and standing crops at several parts of the state.
Blowing away of houses and other structures were reported in Tamenglong, Noney, Senapati districts of the State.
Reports said that houses were damaged in the Tamei area of Tamenglong district. Roofs of some houses were also blown away by the strong wind at Tamenglong headquarters on Monday night.
Standing crops were also damaged by the heavy rain in these districts, reports said.
However, there were no reports of human casualty so far.
Meanwhile, the Department of Relief and Disaster Management issued a fresh alert while stating that very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Chandel, Jiribam, and Pherzawl in the next 24 hours.
The department advised the public to be cautious while going outside. (NNN)
