Improving connectivity, infrastructure key to develop NE region: Jaishankar

IMPHAL, Nov 26 (NNN): Union minister of External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday stressed the importance of improving the connectivity and infrastructures for India’s Northeast region.
The Union minister who arrived in Imphal on a two-day visit in Manipur attended an interaction programme held in Imphal’s Classic Grande on Saturday evening.
The interaction programme was hosted jointly by the Union ministry of External Affairs and Confederation of Indian Industries.
The Union minister said that improvement of the connectivity and infrastructure is the key to development of the Northeast region.
The Northeast region needs better connectivity with developed infrastructures while bringing up the region at par with other regions of the country, he said.
“There is a need for giving more emphasis on tourism and human resource sectors so that the region gets a place in the global tourism industry,” he further said.
The Union minister hoped that holding such an interaction programme will enable new innovative ideas for the development of the region.
Taking part in the interaction, Union minister of state for External Affairs, RK Ranjan said that knowing the importance of the region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also giving a special focus in the development of the region.
The Centre has been working hard for the improvement of the connectivity and infrastructures for bringing all round development in the region, he also said.
Ranjan also called upon the businessmen and entrepreneurs taking part in the programme to help improve the economy of the region and enter into the global economy.
The interaction held on Saturday will be an eye opener for the businessmen and entrepreneurs of the region, he hoped.
Earlier on his arrival in Imphal airport, Dr S Jaishankar was accorded a warm welcome by a delegation of Union minister of state for External Affairs, Dr RK Ranjan and Manipur education minister, Th Basantakumar.
After the interaction programme, he paid a visit to the ongoing 10-day Sangai Festival at its venue in Imphal’s Hapta Kangjeibung.
During his stay in Imphal, the Union minister will hold a talk with Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on the international border issue with Myanmar.

Union minister of state for External Affairs, RK Ranjan, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs and North East Council (NEC) also took part in the Union minister’s interaction with businessmen and entrepreneurs of the region.
