IMPHAL, May 19: Locals of Naoremthong area of Imphal West district on Sunday staged a protest on Sunday to condemn the shooting of people in the locality that killed a worker and injured two others on Saturday night.
On Saturday night, around 8 pm, armed miscreants shot and injured three workers of Keystone Private Limited, who had been engaged in the construction of Imphal Sewerage Project at Naoremthong under Lamphel Police station in Imphal West district.
One of the workers later identified as Shree Ram Hangsada from Jharkhand state, succumbed to bullet injuries, while the other two workers hailing from the same state were undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Imphal.
Local sources said that some miscreants, who had come in a car, shot them after whisking away the three workers from the makeshift camp of the workers on the bank of Nambul River at Naoremthong Khulem Leikai on Saturday night.
The miscreants whisked them away around 7.30 pm and abandoned them after shooting them at a place around 100 meters away from the makeshift camp of the workers.
Shortly after the shooting incident, top officials of the state police including an IG rushed to the spot and took ground zero stock of the situation.
With additional forces from the Imphal West district police headquarters, the police also conducted a massive search operation in the nearby localities to nab the culprits.
Further, the police commandos also conducted a search operation at several places in Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar of Imphal.
However, there were no reports of arrest of any suspect during the operations.
While strongly condemning the shooting of innocent workers, the locals demanded clarification if any armed rebel group was involved in the shooting.
Alleging that the shootout has created fear and panic to the residents, they also appealed to all those concerned not to repeat such an incident. (NNN)
