Man shot, grenade planted in school in Manipur

IMPHAL, May 24: A 61-year-old man was shot at on the leg at Akasoi village in Bishnupur district in Manipur on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Mutum Ibungo Meitei (61) of Terakhong Maning Leika. According to police sources, he was shot on his left leg by armed miscreants suspected to be cadres of a rebel groups at Akasoi village under Kumbi Police Station around 3.15 pm on Friday.

The injured person has been admitted to JNIMS (hospital), Imphal, for treatment, the police said.

The police registered a case for investigation to know the motive behind the incident.

In another second incident, unknown miscreants threw a hand grenade at the gate of UNACO College at Khongman under Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district around 1.30 pm on Friday.

The police said that the bomb wrapped in a black polythene bag was found placed at the gate of the college by some unknown persons.

On being informed about the unattended polythene by locals, a team of police personnel from the Irilbung Police Station rushed to the spot and took the necessary precautionary measures before calling experts from the state police bomb detection and disposal squad.

Upon opening the bag, the experts found a hand grenade in a tiffin box. The hand grenade was safely removed and defused by the bomb squad team later, the police added.
