KAMOJ, Jan 18: In a significant operation, Assam Rifles successfully foiled a cross-border smuggling attempt of areca nuts in Kamjong district.
Acting on credible intelligence, the security forces launched a search operation in the vicinity connecting Shankalok village and the border village Aloyo where it intercepted a convoy of eight trucks suspected of illegally transporting areca nuts without valid documents.
The operation revealed a well-organized attempt to distribute the seized areca nuts in the black market.
Taking to the micro-blogging site X, the Assam Rifles confirmed the interception of 870 bags, weighing a total of 70 tons, with an estimated value of Rs 8.40 crore.
“#AssamRifles foiled smuggling of Areca Nuts worth Rs 8.40 crores by eight trucks at Shangkalok Village, Kamjong District, Manipur on 16 Jan 2023,” wrote Assam Rifles on X.
The seized consignment was handed over to the Forest Beat Officer, Gomnam, in Kamjong district following the operation.
