IMPHAL, Jan 4: The Commission of Inquiry (Manipur violence) has extended the time for filing statements or complaint/ allegation by way of affidavit till January 24.
The Commission of Inquiry appointed by the central government to conduct an inquiry into various aspects of violence in Manipur that took place on and after May 3 last year had invited all persons acquainted with the subject matter of the inquiry to furnish to the commission their statements by way of affidavits.
The commission, in a public notice issued on November 23 informed that any person may also file affidavits directly with the commission through post or in person within a period of 45 days from the date of issue of the public notice.

The time has been extended taking into account various circumstances, and in particular the public interest and the interest of fair inquiry by giving opportunity to the maximum number of persons to file their statements, or complaint/ allegation by way of affidavit, it said.
The Commission has received a number of applications/requests for extension of time for filing statements or complaint/ allegation by way of affidavit, the notification said.
The Commission has given serious consideration to various factors reflected in the applications/ requests seeking extension of time.
The Commission has also considered, among other factors, that sporadic incidents of violence took place during the notice period which resulted in disruption of normal life and activity in parts of Manipur, it added.
The Central government on June 4 last year appointed a three-member Commission of Inquiry headed by Ajai Lamba, former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, to probe the ethnic violence in Manipur that has claimed more than 200 lives so far and displaced over 50,000 people.
The Commission will be probing the ‘cause and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities’ that had taken place May 3 last year and thereafter as well as the sequence of events.
They will submit their report to the Centre ‘not later than six months from the date of its first sitting’. (NNN)
