IMPHAL, May 20 (NNN): Heavy rains continued to play havoc in Manipur as more areas in the valley as well as in the hills got flooded on Thursday.

The normal vehicular movement along Imphal-Dimapur section of the national highway (NH-2) also disrupted to a certain degree due to damages of the road and bridges along the highway at several places. The rupturing of the road at various places, particularly in Tadubi area of Senapati district partially disrupted the vehicular movement on the national highway, the lifeline of Manipur.

Reports said that a portion of the highway sank near Tadubi Bazar, following which the crossing of loaded heavy trucks in the area were forced to strand even as light four-wheelers and buses crossed the area with utmost care.

It can be mentioned here that movement of all kinds of vehicles along Imphal-Silchar road or NH-37 remained halted completely after the collapse of the bailey bridge on Irang River in Tamenglong district on May 12 last.

Meanwhile, reports also said that several areas in Bishnupur district of the state were flooded inundating more than 30 houses in Nambol area of the district. Residents of areas across Nambol and its adjoining areas including Nambol Sabal Leikai were severely affected following heavy rainfall and also due to the overflowing of the Nambol River.

Water entered homes at Nambol Sabal Leikai, forcing the families to relocate to safer places, the reports said. They were taking shelters at their relatives and nearby safer places. Around seven houses at Nambol Naorem Leikai were also shifted to safer places after their houses were inundated. Roads were underwater and many schools have been closed down as the school premises were inundated.

Overflow of Lairam River and flooding of the Sana Lake have also inundated several fish farms and standing vegetables and crops. The heavy current water of the river had also swept away a bridge connecting the Nambol Naorem with other parts. People across the Nambol area are facing drinking water problems after flood water entered ponds.

In another development, some areas in Imphal East district headquarters including the DC office complex were flooded due to waterlogging and overflowing of the Kongba River. The offices of several departments located inside the DC office complex closed down due to the flood. More areas of Imphal West also inundated by the overflowing of the Nambul River coupled with water logging due to bad drainage system. Uripok, Sagolband and its adjoining areas were the worst affected areas of the district.
