Imphal, March 18: Hundreds of daily wage women workers organised protest marches against criminal elements known for extorting money from truckers. They expressed their anger over the recent firing incidents and destruction of vehicles involved in sand and pebble transportation.
Village authorities of Keihao, Tumukhong, Moirangpurel, and Itham strongly condemned the burning of vehicles and the random firing by militants in the inter-districts of Imphal East and Kangpokpi on March 17.
The protesting women, mostly employed in sand mines along the riverbeds, rallied against the attacks and the high taxation imposed on trucks transporting construction materials from nearby quarries.
The banners and placards carried by the protesters demanded an end to harassment of truck drivers, peaceful working conditions, relief from suffering, and immediate action from authorities.
The rallies were a response to the vehicle burnings that took place on Sunday afternoon. Achoubi Devi, a leader in the protest, condemned the unauthorized taxation enforced by miscreants, ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per truck, for operations within the sand mines and pebble quarries.
